The Burguret route offers an unrivalled wilderness trekking experience on Mount Kenya. Though an old track, the route is rarely used by conventional trekkers but it’s a good choice for seekers of the quintessential African jungle adventure experience. The trail meanders through dense forest cover and luxuriant bamboo vegetation as you head towards the peaks. You will descend through the Naromoru track.

Day 1: Nairobi-Naromoru

From Nairobi, drive for 3-4 hours to Naromoru on the western slopes of Mount Kenya for lunch. Meet the guide in the afternoon for trek briefing and preparation.

Day 2: Giant Bamboo

Transfer to Gathiuru and a 4-5 hours hike through dense bamboo vegetation to Giant Bamboo campsite (2600m).

Day 3: Highland Castle

Hike a further 5-6 hours to our next camp at Highland Castle (3,700m).

Day 4: Mackinders Camp

Gradually ascend through the moorlands towards the majestic high peaks. Our path joins to the summit circuit path in the afro-alpine region and we follow the trail leading us to our next overnight stop at Mackinder’s Camp (4,300m).

Day 5: Mackinder’s Camp

This is a day of acclimatisation. You can rest at the camp or take a short walk on the summit circuit path up to the Hausberg col, returning to camp for lunch.

Day 6: Mackinder’s Camp-Point Lenana-Met Station

Leaving the camp at 0300hrs you hike up the steep scree slopes to Point Lenana (4985m), the hikers’ summit. It is planned that you arrive in time to witness the African Sun rising over the equator as it reflects its golden glow on the Majestic peaks of Batian and Nelion. We descend for 2 hours back to Mackinder’s camp for breakfast. Then we do a further 4-5 hours gradual descent across the moors and the lower vertical bog up to the Met Station (3,000m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Nairobi

Leave after breakfast for a gentle 2-3 hour walk down through dense strands of bamboo and forest canopies to Naromoru Park gate. Pick up and transfer to Nairobi.
